THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Saw the dubbed version. Surprisingly good in terms of voice acting although there's not much change in terms of storytelling. Music is still good and Johnny Yong Bosch's voice as Daryl is easily recognizable. "I got this! I can take them all on!"

Fun stuff. The quality seems to better compared to the OVAs. That jazz music ringing in my ears still..

Just finished watching the dubbed version. Having watched the original as it was released, I initially did not care for the voice work of the english actor for Io. The japanese just came across much more sinister and crazed. I got used to it pretty quick though. Also, the scene where Karla is caught by the GM's hand and is screaming was far better performed in the original language. Certainly not moments that swayed my love of the franchise and the film, merely observations.

I was pretty disappointed in the added scenes though. The episodic format left me thinking one thing, and this version another. I did appreciate the prototype zeong..zaku thing though, if only on screen for a moment.

Thunderbolt really drives home the realities of the war and reminds that the franchise is not solely about the glorification of killing machines. Io points this out a couple of times, and looks down, literally, on the young new recruits that salute the gundam and take selfies with it before going straight to their deaths in the coming battle.

I didn't liked the added scenes. The 4 part ONA had a nice ending that closed the conflict and left with a strong impression. This one has a "to be continued" ending which insinuated that there will be more, and while I'm cool if there's more, in comparison to the original is less "self-contained".

Other than that, nothing to add.

But does the heart have the right perspective?

Some scenes were added... extended fight scenes and extended ending scenes… be sure to stay until the end finish (end credit scene)...

That is why I fell in love with this franchise...

Great watch. Both sides showing how fucked up they can be. No CG Gundam damn near brought a tear to my eyes. Full Armor was so cool and beautiful. Everything was beautiful. Glad Io survived.

Karla on the beach tho!

I didn't know there were ONAs preceding this therefore I didn't watch any of it.

Wow those young pilots are really just kids, very young meatbags for cannon fodder. Having watched some other Gundam series before I shouldn't have been surprised anymore but it still got me there. >_< Also with the intentional severing of the last of his limbs. o_O

Was kind of a fun watch

The animation was really good, didn't care for the character models at first but they grew on me over time. I really hated the jazz but the music Daryl played was awesome. I had a preconceived opinion prior to watching that I would not like it. Having watched it now I did not hate it but I also did not like it.
It had good mech fights so that's probably the only thing I'll give it props for. Oh and also daryls music choice was A1.

This is easily the most brutal Gundam series. I have some problems with it, but this is honestly the best thing the Gundam franchise has produced in a while. There really wasn't a need for this anime to be so dark, but I did appreciate that Gundam Thunderbolt did dark the right way. It did sacrifice a lot to have flashy visuals, but at least those were some of the best looking fights I've seen.

a few days a watched the series, first season of 4 episodes, and this film was the same footage, except the last 2 minutes that we can watch a small advance of the second season!!!

The film is cool, the cruelty and barbarian of the war, in two men in different army trying to kill the other with their mobile suits. Two men differentes, in personality and body, and the past timeline too!! and all to end in this bloody space battlefield, arround Side 4!!!
In this hour we can enjoy/watch/tear the worst of any war, the worst of the humanity!!!
The music, pride!!!

7/10 (impact me more the series ;) )

This was a bit of a disappointment, outside of the "mech porn" and shock value there wasen't much too it.
If only the main characters were more fleshed out it would have made the final battle better.

The art and fights were great, but everything else was just chaotic drama and awful music.

I mostly watched this to check out the english dub team's work in anticipation of the new Gundam Seed redub. Gotta say, it was a great dub.

Nothing new or different with the movie but still a amazing rewatch of a real piece of art.

The one word that kept running through my mind was simply, "SAVAGE." This was a seriously gnarly Gundam, I've got to put Io right up there with Mikazuki on my list of all time greatest Gundam pilots.

This was excellent. Savage is a great word for it. Those snipers were blasting feddie pilots like it was nothing. Very powerful. Liked how we got what seemed to be another newtype piloting a Gundam outside of the main characters.

Visuals were great. Some scenes were choppy, but had coherence to it. Excellent film. I haven't seen the OVAs.

Since I watched the OVAs I guess this was the same with, with no exception or more.

Still makes me sad that Daryl had to be amputated to win against Flemming, Claudia's death and Karla's craziness still hurts. On the flip side neither Flemming or Daryl died, and so their fated battle begins again. But Damn did Daryl wanted to kill Flemming, I would too since he is a cocky bastard.

The other people are sympathized with was the children who all died in that battle. Anyways still a good story and the animation along with the jazzy flow music.

7/10.

Very well crafted.
All style,no substance.

Typically one of those entertainment things parading as "mature" stuff and loved by US / West peoples.

Enjoyment: 2/5

A poster above called this gnarly and that's the right word for it. Raw brutal Gundam at it's gnarliest. The art and animation are outstanding, but I question the use of free jazz for the show. I like jazz, but I think it was pretty jarring and distracted from the action too many times.

People saying they did not care for the characters obviously haven't seen too much Gundam. Tomino and co don't love their characters and treat them accordingly. There is a lot of anguish and suffering, and there is no payoff, no resurrection skills or power of return. War is hell, that's it. And no, it's not a Western thing like some pedantic commenters here say. It's pure Japanese. They experienced war as hell first hand even though the younger generations might have forgotten it (or never been taught it should I say).

Pure fanservice but ironically this have a better character development than the main series.
Also a Gundam without this newtype is automatically better. Lol
