Football Manager 2023 on Mac: Native support & Benchmarks (2024)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a spreadsheet, an AI-powered simulator, and football had a baby? Football Manager 2023, the latest release in the series, is exactly that.

If you’re the kind of person who gets a dopamine hit when you see systems within systems giving you statistics and incredibly in-depth information about pretty much everything, then this may just be the game for you.

Can you play Football Manager 2023 on Mac?

You can absolutely play Football Manager 2023 on your Mac, including Intel and M1/M2 Models. The game’s system requirements explicitly include support for ARM-based machines.

It is worth mentioning that Football Manager games have been providing good macOS support for years now. These games may not offer native M1/M2 support, but they nonetheless run great on ARM-based machines.

How to play Football Manager 2023 on Mac

As mentioned before, Football Manager 2023 now runs natively on Mac, and that includes Intel-based and M1 Macs. Therefore, we won’t waste your time talking about Parallels, Crossover (both excellent tools, but only useful for Windows-exclusive games…), or Streaming services (this has to be said, as some guides spend entire pages talking about streaming WoW on Mac).

You can download and install Football Manager 2023 on your Mac and start playing right away.

Can your Mac run Football Manager 2023? Benchmarks & Mac Performance

These are the Football Manager 2023 M1 benchmarks we have gathered so far:

Football Manager 2022💻 M1 MacBook Air 13", 7-core GPU, 8 GB--SmoothReddit8/17/2022

As it can be seen from the benchmarks performed by our team and by other members of the community, Football Manager games are generally not demanding. These can easily run on modest Windows systems and the same applies for macOS. While we haven’t tested the game on Intel-based Macs, we can most definitely confirm that M1 machines can run this game without breaking a sweat.

As a reminder, this is how we describe the different levels of performance:

  • Below 20 FPS: Unplayable: Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns.
  • 20-30 FPS: Borderline: Can be OK in slow-paced games. Still, not optimal.
  • 30-45 FPS: Playable: Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
  • 45-60 FPS: Smooth: Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.
  • 60+ FPS: Very Smooth: For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most.

Can you play Football Manager 2023 on MacBook?

Based on the performance we’ve experienced with both FM21 and FM22, we are confident that Football Manager 2023 will run great on all M1 and M2 machines, including MacBook Air models (which are the slowest ARM-based systems right now). Stay tuned as we’ll be testing the game on more machines soon.

Football Manager 2023: Everything you need to know

The game puts you in charge of every imaginable aspect of behind-the-scenes football management and somehow provides a user interface that makes it not just easy to navigate but actually fun and addicting to play.

You not only have control over building your team and deciding tactics (which the opposing team’s AI will dynamically learn and counter), but you are also given the reins when it comes to your finances & budget, transfer policies, scouting programs (including youth development), training schedules, and so much more.

As previous versions of Football Manager have in the past, FM23 supports both single-player and competitive multiplayer gameplay experiences. Cross-play is available between macOS and Windows.

There is no doubt that this iteration is the best in the series thus far; however, many fans of the series have noticed a diminishing return of new features and improvements from version to version. After all, there’s only so much that goes on in real-life football, and when you have a simulator as comprehensive as the previous year’s Football Manager 2022, what really is there to improve?

Well, a few things, actually. While the most exciting change for football fans is likely the long-awaited inclusion of UEFA licensing and match-day graphics enhancements, there are a host of smaller improvements that expand upon and streamline the gameplay experience. One highlight is perhaps the new club supporter system, which simulates the attitude and satisfaction levels of your team’s supporters and allows you to play to their ever-changing expectations and preferences.

For those who want more control over their in-game world (have god-like abilities to cheat almost every aspect of the game), an “In-game Editor” DLC is available on Steam. User reviews of this, however, appear to almost unanimously be of the opinion that this is a cash grab and should come free with the game. In the end, I suppose it depends on how badly you want to cheat.
